January Wrap Up

Hello 2019!

The Holiday’s flew past in a whirlwind of family gatherings, presents, fireworks, cakes, mini-top-hats, and SO many new books. As an aggressive book-lover, I’m a pretty easy person to buy a Christmas Gift for. I got so many books, and Chapters Gift Cards.. that I think I’m set for the YEAR. Lets be honest though, with so many amazing books coming out every WEEK.. I won’t last until March without buying a new book. Who are we kidding? (I bought one an hour ago.. and I’m not even sorry about it). Ryan is probably horrified about the book stacks, overwhelming our Living Room. I really need another shelf! Our current shelf is from IKEA, and it’s amazing. I think I’ll just get the exact same one again, and sort of double-stack them.

January is the longest month of the year, but it went by in a flash. Work has been so busy, and life has just not stopped rolling along. Ryan and I managed to see a bunch of amazing movies, and discover some wild new T.V shows too! I’ll tell you all about everything below. I didn’t really make any “Resolutions”, because I never stick to them. I have a lot of home-improvement type of projects in mind, as well as tons of ideas for the Blog. I flirt with the idea of a Bookish-You-Tube Channel.. but I’m just so awkward and sort of petrified about putting myself so “out there”, you know what I mean? I’ll flirt with the idea a bit longer, haha.

There is a lot coming in 2019 to look forward to.. mainly being my Sister’s Bachelorette Party Trip to Palm Springs (April), as well as her and Luke’s WEDDING (August). I can’t wait for all the memories we are about to make. Just trying to stop time and take it all in. I can’t believe 2018 is already over.. I feel like I was writing my “January Wrap Up 2017” YESTERDAY. Also I did the whole “Best 9” Instagram thing (above). It was a great year. Here’s to the next!

Before I get started with the Wrap-Up, I wanted to quickly share some photos of our Christmas & New Year’s Eve Holidays. I didn’t post them in the last Wrap-Up, and there were some cute ones I wanted to share. Also I thought I would post something of a mini “What I got for Christmas” haul pic too.. in case you wanted to see what Books were on my Wish-List!

This movie was one of the most fantastic things I’ve ever seen. An incredible Bio-Pic, that was equal parts hilarious, fun, full of music and laughs.. while also being devastating. The ACTING in this was breathtaking.. mainly Rami Malek’s portrayal of the iconic Freddie Mercury. Rami didn’t just “play” Freddie and do his “best”.. Rami honestly BECAME Freddie. The mannerisms, the face, the vibe.. literally everything.

My Family have always been die-hard Queen fans, and I grew up listening to the records on repeat. “Wayne’s Word” is one of my Dad’s favorite movies, if not his #1 most loved. We must have watched it together, 30 times (minimum). You all know the iconic “Bohemian Rhapsody Car Scene”, and I can’t tell you the NOSTALGIA I felt rushing back towards me, when the film dives into the writing/creating of this song.

The SONGS in this movie were so amazing. So many huge hits (some that I even forgot Queen had written). I found myself actually stomping my feet during the “We Will Rock You Scene. I was all-in with this movie, haha. I wish I had seen it in the Theater, I bet it would have felt like a Concert.

All the amazing music aside.. the movie really focuses on Freddie’s personal life, his sexuality, his complicated relationship with his family/and with his girlfriend. It was just brilliant, and I will probably cry if Rami Malek doesn’t win the Oscar. I might throw something at the T.V. The only person I can even STAND him losing to.. is probably Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born”, because he was just stunning as well.

While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. FASCINATING

janwrap (185)janwrap (132)janwrap (133)

You guys know I love a good Documentary, and when my Sister called me a few weeks ago and said “YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY ON NETFLIX”.. I raced to the T.V. I remember hearing about this “Fyre Festival” Disaster, a while back. It was all over Social Media for weeks, and I was just watching it all unfold in a semi-interested way. I remember seeing a bunch of Instagram Influencer’s promoting this Festival Ad nauseam.. and I was intrigued. I had NO IDEA what a fucking mess this whole thing actually was.

I almost don’t want to get too into the whole plot of this Documentary, because there was something so thrilling about watching it all unfold. I found myself screaming out loud.. “NO WAY”.. “WAIT, WHAT?!”.. and I don’t want to rob you of those shocked moments. I will just leave you with this…. It’s about a music festival, that was supposed to be AMAZING.. that was advertised with Kendall Jenner rolling around in a bikini/promising an amazing trip…. and what happened was just… awful haha. Please watch this one, and let me know your thoughts!

Also I will mention.. Netflix released their Documentary on this, around the same time Hulu released their OWN Documentary about the same subject. I watched both, and I recommend you do as well. The Hulu one, was in-full posted on You-Tube, and it was interesting as well. I personally preferred the Netflix one Cinematic ally, but the Hulu one had a slightly more intimate interview with the main “guy”. Both great, and both worth your time.

Ugh, this was a disturbing watch. Brilliant Documentary, with really well done Investigative Journalism… but HARD to watch. The amount of anger and frustration I felt towards this family was OUTRAGEOUS. I’m so mad about it still.. my fingers are like digging into the keyboard in a rage haha. I almost don’t even want to recommend it, but it’s so twisted and worth a watch. Really awful stuff.. but I think somewhere buried within the insane amount of poor judgement and colossal mistakes.. lies some type of lesson?

I feel like a total book-snob idiot even saying this…. but do you know the feeling, when the book is just “SO much better” than the film?

Okay so in all fairness, I read the last line of this book.. less than 24 hours before this movie hit Netflix. I feel like if I had read this book a long time ago, I would have LOVED the movie.

That being said, I DID really enjoy this movie. A solid 7/10. I thought Sandra Bullock was fantastic, and I will watch anything/and everything that John Malkovich is in. My biggest issue with this movie, wasn’t that it went “off book” which it did, for a LOT of the story. Some of which was obviously to hustle the story-line along, and simplify things… but along the way I felt like the truly terrifying feel of the book was lost.

When I read this book, I can’t explain to you the creeping dread and terror I felt. I think a huge reason this didn’t translate to the screen as well.. is because reading about something/seeing something is a big difference. When we are reading about this horrifying new world.. where you are blind-folded.. and God knows WHAT is out there… it’s horrifying. When you are seeing it on a movie screen.. you are actually “seeing” their portrayal of it.. and the terror isn’t as strong. My point I guess.. is that the scary things you conjure in your own head/within your own imagination are often much more terrifying than the reality.

I felt this was a huge theme in my book-to-movie comparisons. The book worked so well, because as a reader you literally couldn’t “see” anything, so you could relate to Malorie’s character much easier. You could imagine how scary and paralyzing it must have been for her, quite literally feeling her way around this new world. However, I thought all of the scenes filmed on the River were STUNNING visually. They picked a really beautiful location to film in for sure.

Also I will NEVER forgive the movie’s Director for cutting the “It’s Raining BIRDS” part. Or the part with the animal attack! Those were the MOST terrifying parts of the book for me. Also lets just say, the “ending” in the book was a tinge darker. This movie for sure gave it the “Hollywood Ending”. I wish the Director had kept it as bleak as the book. I was going to review the book below, but I think this accurately captures my thoughts on it. It was amazing, READ it before you watch this (if you are somehow NOT one of the 40+ million people who have already watched it haha).

True-Crime Documentary Series

janwrap (112)janwrap (111)

Before watching this Netflix Series, I knew very little about Ted Bundy. I knew of him as the infamous Serial Killer who was a psychopathic creep, but not many details about his particular crimes. Everyone always says how “handsome” he was. Which is SO disturbing on another level. However, Psychopaths are VERY often incredibly charming and manipulative individuals. Society often has a hard time accepting “good looking” people are capable of horrendous crimes. It’s weird. However “cute” people might find him, he is a monster who took the lives of all these beautiful young women. Disgusting.

Whispering-confessions-of-serial-killer-Ted-Bundy-reveal-how-lady-killer-lured-his-20-victims-wh.jpg

I was SHOCKED watching this. The sheer horror of his crimes, the countless women who’s live’s he destroyed.. not only them, but the lives of their families and loved ones. I think the most chilling part of it all, was hearing his voice… listening to him try to lie his way out of this all. Also how charming he came off.. classic psychopathic behavior. It rattled me, because hearing his voice/seeing his face.. really gives you an understanding into how so many people were tricked by him. The creep is actually quite charming! The whole thing made my stomach curl up into knots. Also this series was an edge-of-your-seat-thrill-ride.. I was so surprised by all the shit that went down. I mean the COURTHOUSE scene.. I can’t say any more without spoiling it so hard.

I’ll attach the Google-Plot Summary as well for you guys if you want more info, but take care with spoilers (in case you want to go in blind).

Also as I mentioned in my “Best of Sundance” post, the new movie about Bundy (starring Zac Efron as Ted) “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil” is coming out soon. It looks incredible. Not only does Efron manage to capture Bundy’s charm, but he looks exactly like him. I’m not kidding. You NEED to see this..

This was just randomly on Netflix, and I clicked on it. I LOVE British Series.. so much. They are unlike anything else, and I could honestly say 5 of my most loved Mystery Series.. were from the B.B.C.

THIS show was lurking on Netflix, and was all over my “Recommendations” section. I had no idea what it was, but decided to throw it on. That was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Ryan and I were hooked, and laughing out LOUD from episode one.

This show “Derry Girls” is set in Derry, Northern Ireland, and it’s focused around a group of young girls.. and their families, school friends, romantic interests, etc! My Husband Ryan was born and raised in Liverpool, England…. and he was LOVING this show immediately. He could totally understand the quick slang-filled accents, and I could tell it was really nostalgic for him.

This show is funny. Like really funny. Dark, a bit taboo, loud, and just so gut-clenching witty. It’s the Coming-Of-Age Show I’ve been waiting for all my life! I LOVE all of the main girls so much, individually… but overall it was just spectacular! Can’t wait for Season 2.

I’m sure by now, all of you know how utterly obsessed I am with the Musical “Les Misérables”. I will go and see it every single time it comes to town, and I’ve probably watched the movie 40 times? I just love it, in a borderline creepy way.

As soon as I heard about this BBC adaptation coming out, with NO singing..  I was thrilled.. and also a little sad about the loss of the soundtrack. However, after seeing every episode.. I think the soundtrack would have ruined this show. This adaptation was much more heavily story-based, and it managed to bring the same emotions though.. through use of incredible acting, instead of rousing song. It was so powerful, shocking, and amazingly acted. I cried so much! Also Dominic West (who plays Jean Valjean) is an Actor I really admire (especially for his work in Showtime’s “The Affair), as well as Lily Collins “To The Bone”, who plays Fantine. There was just SO much to unpack here. If you are a “Les Misérables” fan, you need to experience this! Also if there is anywhere I can VOTE for Lily Collins to win a B.A.F.T.A for her role as Fantine, please send me the link.

I enjoyed the First Season of “Friends from College”, mainly Fred Savage. He is a Producer for one of the BEST shows on T.V “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”. Ryan loves the show so much, and I’d never seen an episode before we started dating. He showed me one, and it was just… hilarious in a depraved, very offensive, but hilarious way. Danny DeVito is everything. Also Dennis Reynolds is like the “should-become-a-serial-killer-of-my-dreams”. Anyways… if Fred Savage was involved in that mastermind of a show.. then I trust “Friends From College” must be at least decent.

It is. At least Decent. It’s funny, it’s modern… it has it’s moments. It’s just not THAT great. Especially Season 2. Season 1 was much funnier, whereas Season 2 kind of lingers. Still liked them both a lot, and can’t wait for Season 3! Season 2 left us on a huge cliffhanger! I hate cliffhangers, I get SO O.C.D over it all.

BOOKS

1.) “No Exit”

By, Taylor Adams

8.5/10

Thriller/Horror

“No panic, no fight, no flight, just that shivery little moment when daily life goes rancid.”

janwrap (165)

I saw this book all over Instagram, and so many people told me to read it. As soon as I looked into the Plot, I was intrigued. The story is basically about a young woman named Darby who gets caught in a really awful snow-storm, and has to take shelter at a Rest Stop in the mountains.. until the snow plows arrive in the morning. She gets inside, and there are four other people there. She ends up going out to her car to try and find a cell signal, and notices something in the back window of one of the other parked cars. She looks into the back window of a snow covered van.. and there is a child in a CAGE!!!! Basically the book takes off from here, and it’s one of the most intense reading experiences I’ve ever had.

As soon as Darby sees the child, she realizes she is quite literally trapped in the middle of NOWHERE with someone who abducted a child. But WHICH ONE IS IT?! How will she escape? How can she rescue the little girl?!

Honestly the vibe of this book was so dark and eerie, and deeply claustrophobic. You can feel the anxiety of being trapped, and it’s such a smothering intense feeling. The snowstorm added a creepy feel as well.

My only negative, is that I didn’t really LOVE Darby’s personality that much. I’m not sure what it was, but she just sort of rubbed me the wrong way. I was still very invested in the story though, and my slight dislike of her inner monologue wasn’t a huge problem.

Good-Reads Plot Summary

(A brilliant, edgy thriller about four strangers, a blizzard, a kidnapped child, and a determined young woman desperate to unmask and outwit a vicious psychopath.

A kidnapped little girl locked in a stranger’s van. No help for miles. What would you do?

On her way to Utah to see her dying mother, college student Darby Thorne gets caught in a fierce blizzard in the mountains of Colorado. With the roads impassable, she’s forced to wait out the storm at a remote highway rest stop. Inside, are some vending machines, a coffee maker, and four complete strangers.

Desperate to find a signal to call home, Darby goes back out into the storm . . . and makes a horrifying discovery. In the back of the van parked next to her car, a little girl is locked in an animal crate.

Who is the child? Why has she been taken? And how can Darby save her?

There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, and no way out. One of her fellow travelers is a kidnapper. But which one?

Trapped in an increasingly dangerous situation, with a child’s life and her own on the line, Darby must find a way to break the girl out of the van and escape.

But who can she trust?

With exquisitely controlled pacing, Taylor Adams diabolically ratchets up the tension with every page. Full of terrifying twists and hairpin turns, No Exit will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you breathless.)

YA Fiction

“Because when they thought the stars were sticking to her, really all the loneliness and sadness were falling off. The stars were underneath.”

janwrap (144)janwrap (141)

One of my favorite Book-Tuber’s named this as the “Best Book” she read in 2018. I don’t read a ton of YA anymore, but given the mixed reviews surrounding this story, I was curious what it was all about. Also side-note: This has to be one of the most stunning book covers EVER.

This is the story of two twins, Mara and Owen. They are incredibly close, and share everything, including a tight-knit friend group. One night they attend a party, and the unthinkable happens. Mara wakes up the next morning to find out that Owen’s girlfriend Hannah (who is also one of Mara’s best friends) is accusing Owen of rape.

Mara is obviously shocked, and struggles to make sense of the news. How could this have happened? What exactly happened? Could her twin brother really have done this awful thing? It was a perspective on this issue, that I’ve never read from, and it was an enlightening look into how a family deals with such a horrible incident.. especially when the accused is someone you thought you knew.

This book was beautifully written, with some of the most gorgeous sentences I’ve ever read. I loved all the metaphors that had to do with the stars, and the constellations. Also this book features a bi-sexual main character, and deals with gender confusion as well. So it wins points for great representation. What I didn’t like at all.. was how the main issue of the book, the sexual assault, was handled. I think this book made some huge mistakes with the way they wrapped some things up, and the way some of the scenes went down. Just NOT a fan of some of the messages this book ultimately gives off? I appreciate what it was trying to do, I just think it really misses the mark.. and actually made me pretty angry. I’m not actually sure I would recommend reading this.

janwrap (143)janwrap (142)

Good-Reads Plot Summary

(“I need Owen to explain this. Because yes, I do know that Owen would never do that, but I also know Hannah would never lie about something like that.”

Mara and Owen are about as close as twins can get. So when Mara’s friend Hannah accuses Owen of rape, Mara doesn’t know what to think. Can the brother she loves really be guilty of such a violent crime? Torn between the family she loves and her own sense of right and wrong, Mara is feeling lost, and it doesn’t help that things have been strained with her ex-girlfriend and best friend since childhood, Charlie.

As Mara, Hannah, and Charlie navigate this new terrain, Mara must face a trauma from her own past and decide where Charlie fits in her future. With sensitivity and openness, this timely novel confronts the difficult questions surrounding consent, victim blaming, and sexual assault. )

COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS

1.) “Killing and Dying”

By, Adrian Tomine

10/10

A stunning Graphic Novel

janwrap (162)janwrap (163)

A few weeks ago, I was browsing around the local Comic Book Shop in Downtown Vancouver, and this caught my eye. The minimalist stark cover drew me in, and when I got over how much I loved the font.. the tiny little cover photo blew me away. Upon closer look, I could appreciate the art and detail so much more, and I snatched this up without a second thought. When the cashier was ringing me through, his eyes lit up, and he started raving about this one. He said that the author Adrian Tomine apparently studied everyday people, to capture the essence of this book. After finishing this in one sitting, I can completely understand what he meant.

This book is a collection of a few different short stories. Not only did Adrian Tomine write this book, but he also illustrated the entire thing himself. The art style changes a bit from story to story, but keeps the underlying minimal look and feel. It’s hard to explain what’s so gripping and sort of sobering about all of these stories. They are very basic, and sort of in-your-face simple everyday problems. But they are cutting as well, with dry/often depressing looks into our society, and how we relate to one another. I really loved this, and I just think everyone should read it. Can’t wait to see more from this author.

Good-Reads Plot Summary

(“One of the most gifted graphic novelists of our time.” —Wired

Killing and Dying is a stunning showcase of the possibilities of the graphic novel medium and a wry exploration of loss, creative ambition, identity, and family dynamics. With this work, Adrian Tomine (Shortcomings, Scenes from an Impending Marriage) reaffirms his place not only as one of the most significant creators of contemporary comics but as one of the great voices of modern American literature. His gift for capturing emotion and intellect resonates here: the weight of love and its absence, the pride and disappointment of family, the anxiety and hopefulness of being alive in the twenty-first century.

“Amber Sweet” shows the disastrous impact of mistaken identity in a hyper-connected world; “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture” details the invention and destruction of a vital new art form in short comic strips; “Translated, from the Japanese” is a lush, full-color display of storytelling through still images; the title story, “Killing and Dying”, centers on parenthood, mortality, and stand-up comedy. In six interconnected, darkly funny stories, Tomine forms a quietly moving portrait of contemporary life.

Tomine is a master of the small gesture, equally deft at signaling emotion via a subtle change of expression or writ large across landscapes illustrated in full color. Killing and Dying is a fraught, realist masterpiece.)

10/10!!!

I just randomly grabbed a loose Issue of this, and as soon as I opened it… I just fell in love with the Art. I want to honestly frame each stunning page of it. This is the most magical story about a girl, who after a giant Earthquake.. kind of stumbles into this magical parallel world. Her Sister is captured by one of these magical creatures, and the comics are her adventures trying to infiltrate this world, discover her own powers, and rescue her Sister. She has a sassy little cat-sidekick, and she has the BEST wardrobe, and is just stunning. This series makes me want to dye my hair blue, and just never look back. I can’t wait to read the rest of the Issues in the series. Very highly recommend.

Good-Reads Plot Summary

(An all-new ongoing series from fan-favourite writer SAM HUMPHRIES (Harley Quinn, Nightwing) and red-hot artist JEN BARTEL!

In this neo-noir fantasy, Nina Rodriguez is positive that a secret magic world ruled by ruthless cabals is hiding just beneath the veneer of Los Angeles. The problem: everyone thinks she’s crazy.

The bigger problem: she’s not crazy – she’s right. Can she unravel the mystery before the Great Beast catches up with her.)

9/10

This little comic was so much fun. It’s a satirical look at the “Instagram Influencer/Instagram Model” world, mixed with a bit of drug dealing? Also a threesome-relationship. There was a lot going on, in the few pages that make up the First Issue. The art is stunning, and very modern. I loved everything about this, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes!

Good-Reads Plot Summary

(Haley Mori, a downtrodden alternative-model, happens upon a secret society of elite models in NYC that are using their platforms to sell narcotics. Seeing a possible escape from a lifetime of crushing debt, Haley becomes involved and works her way up the ranks, making new alliances and enemies alike while getting a taste of a power she never knew she craved. In this new stylish crime thriller from writer Pat Shand (Breathless) and artist Emily Pearson (The Wilds), nothing is as it seems.)

Hope you are all doing great, and please let me know all the books, movies, and tv shows you loved in January! I’m always looking for a good recommendation,
