“Have You Watched Any Good Movies on Netflix Lately?”…

Hello Hello You Guys!

Processed with VSCO with n1 preset

So…I usually include some of my recent favorite movie picks in my monthly Wrap-Up’s, but they are usually movies I’ve seen in the theater/and or on some other service. I don’t usually go into any of my Netflix picks, in any great detail. I don’t know about you guys, but one of the questions I always ask pretty much anyone/everyone I see is “Have you watched anything good on Netflix lately?”. I love to hear their answers, and I have an iPhone note like TEN pages long, full of movies I’ll probably never around to. It’s a very overwhelming feeling haha. I should probably get a life, and get out of the house and do something other than watch movies all night… but you know some nights you just need a good Netflix binge.

Processed with VSCO with n1 preset Processed with VSCO with a1 preset

Also keep in mind sometimes Netflix will get rid of certain movies any given month. So as of today (June 10th) here are some of my most loved recent Films that I’ve watched lately.  I’ll separate into categories (Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Documentary, Romance, etc) as well, in case you want to skip ahead or completely ignore a certain section.

Also I won’t bother rating these films out of /10, because if I’ve included them in this post.. I consider them all a resounding 10/10 <3

I’ll do a top 3 in each section <3

Have a great weekend guys!

I’ll be back soon with my June Wrap Up,

xoxo Carly

Movies

Documentaries

1.) “The Imposter”

MV5BODA2MzYzMTUzM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODk4ODgwOA@@._V1_

This documentary was very gripping and un-settling. The concept is bone-chilling in it’s simplicity.. and terror. The idea, when you really think about what happened.. is just skin crawling. I will never forget this film. Such an incredible look into the psyche of a family…. a dark observation of grief and what it will allow. You MUST watch this if you haven’t yet. Still disturbed about this one.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

( A documentary centered on a young man in Spain who claims to a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who has been missing for 3 years.)

2.) ” Casting JonBenet”

MV5BNDgwODk5ODk4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzA3MzU4MTI@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,675,1000_AL_

The infamous JonBenet Ramsey murder case, has been getting a TON of buzz this past year. Countless documentaries and 20/20 type specials have come out, given the anniversary of her tragic murder almost 20 years ago. It’s still one of America’s unsolved murder’s, and it still has the power to create a lot of buzz. I remember being a little kid and hearing all about her murder on the news… I think people still feel a connection to the case, and the desire to find out the truth is stronger than ever. It’s frustrating and maddening, that they haven’t been able to solve this horrific crime.

If I had to sum this Documentary up in one word.. it would be sickening. It’s a very meta approach to a film about this case… It’s a Documentary about real life actors auditioning to play the roles of this infamous family, in a re-creation of the crime. Watching them all “act” out the grief and other infamous scenes from the investigation.. really strikes home.. making you think “how much of what we saw from the Ramsey family, and others involved was ACTING or real”. This film will leave you unsettled, and with even more questions than you had before watching. Really incredible solid film-making.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(The unsolved death of six-year-old American beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey remains the world’s most sensational child murder case. Over 15 months, responses, reflections and performances were elicited from the Ramsey’s Colorado hometown community, creating a bold work of art from the collective memories and mythologies the crime inspired.)

3.) “Citizen Four”

MV5BMTc0MTM0MTA5MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzEwODEwMzE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,681,1000_AL_

Okay so this Documentary won The Oscar for “BEST DOCUMENTARY”… and I immediately went and bought it. I’m a huge fan of Documentaries, especially when they are about current events that I’m not that educated in. I didn’t really know that much about Edward Snowden and his whole situation. I am SO glad I watched this! It was a heart-stopping, incredibly tense… amazing film. Wow. Those scenes in the hotel room, with the journalists.. right before he “leaked” his information.. were some of the most influential and important moments in film.. in the past ten years. This is a Documentary everyone NEEDS to watch, to experience, and to learn from.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(After Laura Poitras received encrypted emails from someone with information on the government’s massive covert-surveillance programs, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong to meet the sender, who turned out to be Edward Snowden. )

Horror

(Ps. Maybe my fav film category)

1.) “Creep”

MV5BMTY0NTU2ODM5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTAwOTA5NTE@._V1_

I almost don’t even want to suggest this to you guys, because it actually disturbed me so deeply. This is maybe the most underrated horror movie of the last ten years. This takes the whole “found footage” genre.. to another level. So sick. So brilliant. I just…. I can’t even explain. It’s a slow burn, and trust me.. it’s worth every single second. Watch this (probably not alone).

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(When a videographer answers a Craigslist ad for a one-day job in a remote mountain town, he finds his client is not at all what he initially seems.)

2.) “Horns”

MV5BMTQ2Nzk5NzIxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTM2NTc5MjE@._V1_SY1000_SX675_AL_

Okay so this one is a bit of a wild card. You guys know how much I love “Harry Potter”, and this horror movie stars none other than… Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe! Firstly I’ll be the first to admit he’s a bit typecast. I will always picture Daniel as “Harry”. It’s just a given. However.. in this film… I didn’t think of Harry once! He was so brilliant and creepy, it was just amazing. This movie was filmed beautifully, and the story was super original and creepy. It’s based on a novel, which is probably why it’s so intricate and perfectly executed. It was also filmed in Vancouver and Squamish, so that’s also a huge plus for me (since I live in Vancouver B.C). Don’t overlook this one guys, it’s a great movie.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(Blamed for the murder of his girlfriend, a man (Daniel Radcliffe) awakes one morning to find he has grown a pair of horns. Armed, now, with supernatural powers, he sets out to find the killer.)

3.) “The Girl with All The Gifts”

MV5BMjQ0NzA4NDcxM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTk1NjUzOTE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,678,1000_AL_

THIS WAS AMAZING. I loved this book so much, and the film version was so stark and chilling. The atmosphere and the vibe was dead on (literally). I have had nightmares about this for weeks. Such a simple story at it’s core, but so gripping and terrifying in it’s execution.

Drama/Thriller

1.) “The Hunt”

MV5BMTg2NDg3ODg4NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzk3NTc3Nw@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,699,1000_AL_

Okay so firstly, who here isn’t in LOVE with the actor Mads Mickkelsen?! I know I am! He is just a genius. Okay so love for Mads aside.. this film is everything. I cried SO hard watching this, and my stomach was in knots the entire time. It was actually awful, but in a really great film kind of way. It was so heartbreaking, beautifully acted, and just perfect. This is a Danish film, and it’s subtitled on Netflix. I know sometimes subtitles can kind of turn you off a film, especially if you are tired and kind of out of it. But trust me here, it’s worth the effort. This movie is one of the best things I’ve seen, ever. One of my top ten movies of all time. It’s hard to even capture how much Mads affected me. Deeply and immensely I’ll say. This film was absolutely fucking INCREDIBLE. So sad, and actually very hard to watch. Especially the “grocery store scene”.. I could cry just thinking about it. I will be Mad’s biggest fan now, probably forever.. after seeing him in this.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son’s custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.)

2.) “The Gift”

MV5BNjc2NTEwOTM3MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTI1MjQyNTE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_

This is one of those movies, that you feel like you have seen 100 times.. but trust me.. this one will knock you on your ass. This movie has a certain “something” that takes it from your average “run of the mill” thriller… to something else. Something iconic. One of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen. You sympathize with every character, and then HATE every character.. and then finally understand and hate/love each one in another way entirely. This movie really throws your “expectations” of a film and it’s characters into free-fall. I changed my feelings towards each character 100 times over. I found this ending deeply mind-fuck-level disturbing as well.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(A young married couple’s lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband’s past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years.)

MV5BMTQzMjM2NjM1Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDM1MjQyNTE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_

3.) “Inception”

MV5BMTk4NzE0OTQxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTE0MjYwMw@@._V1_

I’m sure you have all seen this by now. I’ve probably seen in ten times myself. It’s one of those mind-fuck movies, when you finish it and think “OMG I NEED TO WATCH AGAIN FROM THE BEGINNING”. I’ve done just that, like ten times.. and I’m still confused. I take something new away from this film every single time I see it. It’s so brilliant. Also can we please discuss this CAST?! Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy?! Amazing on so many levels.. also the director Christopher Nolan is a visionary, I can’t wait for his film “Dunkirk” (starring none other than Harry Styles) coming out this year!

Comedy

1.) “The Edge of Seventeen”

MV5BNTcwMDU5NjQ2Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTk5MTMzMDI@._V1_SY999_CR0,0,687,999_AL_

I found this movie SO hilarious, I related SO hard to the main character Nadine. She was so awkward and socially awkward in the best way. Also Woody Harrelson was magic. Just a hilarious coming-of-age in the “internet age” era. Loved every second of this.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until an unexpected friendship with a thoughtful teen (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.)

2.) “Blue Jasmine”

MV5BMTc0ODk5MzEyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzI0MDY1OQ@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_

This film is Woody Allen at his finest. So funny, socially-on-point, and bleak. Cate Blanchette is at her absolute best, playing the hilariously imperfect Jasmine. This movie really captures the sometimes ridiculous excess of the “upper class”. It was star studded, also casting none other than Louis C.K, and Alec Baldwin.. just amazing.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(A New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks a million, but isn’t bringing money, peace, or love…)

3.) “Clueless”

I don’t even need to get into this. This movie WAS my childhood. So many memories, so much pastel…. Just WHATEVER. Everything is amazing… The HUGE cell-phones, the hats, the fashion, the plaid skirts.. and can we please talk about Paul Rudd (the hot step-brother)… does he NEVER age?! I mean seriously. What’s with his non-aging?

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

1.) “Children of Men”

MV5BNDIyZjQ5M2EtYTcwMS00MGFiLWE2NmYtZGQwMzg1NjI5MmJlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjQyMjcwNDM@._V1_SY1000_SX675_AL_

This is one of the most incredible movies on Netflix, and I feel like it’s very overlooked. Not only is Clive Owen at his peak hotness (See: Film “Closer), but it’s just one of those perfectly creepy dystopian-type movies. Pre-“Hunger Games” style. It’s a good time. Well not for the characters, but for you. Loved this film.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have become somehow infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.)

2.) “Chappie”

I loved this SO MUCH. Okay so I’m a bit biased, because of my all-time favorite bands “Die Antwoord”, were the two stars of the film (Ninja & Yo-Landi). They are a VERY out-there, controversial duo from South Africa, and they star in this new film by Neil Blomkamp (creator of “District 9” & “Elysium”). This movie was a bit slaughtered in the media’s reviews, and it upset me so much. I thought it was fantastic and that it had so much heart. I guess the final (and only opinion) that really matters is what you guys each think of it individually. I really loved it, and if you are a Die Antwoord fan.. then just buckle up for the ride of your life.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(In the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.)

3.) “Looper”

MV5BMTM5NTkwMzI2MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTc5MjQ2Nw@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_

I loved this film so much. Like “Inception” this one is an absolute mind-fuck as well, and really requires a re-watch immediately after watching as well. Joseph Gordon Levitt was really having a Hollywood “moment” when this came out, and he is incredible in this one. Although I have to say “The Rainmaker” really stole the show for me. If you guys have seen this you know what I mean <3

(IMDB Plot Summary)

Romance

1.) “45 Years”

MV5BMTgxMTQ4NzMyN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODA0MTgyNzE@._V1_SY1000_SX676_AL_

This movie’s premise really really fucked me up. This is basically everyone’s most insecure nightmare coming true. You are in love, for many many years.. everything is great… and THEN….. Your Husband gets a letter concerning a woman he used to love A LOT. So much drama, so much angst. It’s fantastic really to watch the slow burn to explosion of this one. Wow.

(IMDB Plot Summary)

(A married couple preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary receives shattering news that promises to forever change the course of their lives.)

2.) “Far From The Maddening Crowd”

MV5BMTg1MjI0NTg2M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTgxMzE1MzE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,674,1000_AL_

This film is based on a famous Thomas Hardy novel, which is one of my favorite books (so I might be slightly biased), but I think not. Fan of Thomas Hardy or not.. I think you will love this. There is something about the lead actress Carey Mulligan that is so magnetic… you just fall in love immediately. This movie was EVERYTHING I have ever wanted in a romantic film. A strong female character, a fantastic male romantic lead, a few not-so-fantastic runner-up other characters.. and just the beautiful and poetic landscape of the countryside. This movie was is one word.. beautiful.

3.) “Across The Universe”

MV5BMTIyMTUwNzg3Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjM1MDI1MQ@@._V1_

I am so in love with this movie it’s kind of creepy. I will never forget the first time I saw it in theaters. I was never a huge fan of “The Beatles”, and not because I didn’t like them.. only that I hadn’t really been exposed to their music at all. I grew up in a VERY “Spice Girls” VS “N’Sync” situation… I never knew about much else. This movie is a musical, set and based around “The Beatles”. All the actors sing cover songs of famous “Beatles” songs.. and what I discovered later is that these actors sang LIVE on set for this movie.

This film is magic, and it awakened something within me. I went to Liverpool a few years ago, and I was the biggest and most embarrassing Beatles fan you could ever ask for. This movie woke me up, and changed me for the better. The visuals are stunning, the acting is stunning, and the singing is just…. perfection. I am so in love with this movie I can’t even tell you. So many fantastic cameo’s as well.. Bono from “U2”, Eddie Izzard, etc.

Also if any of you have seen this movie and you are somehow NOT in love with Jim Sturgess or Jim Anderson.. I actually worry about you. Like WHY?!
